For your move to South Africa, a single container space is often sufficient

Those planning a move to South Africa often ship less than they initially anticipate. The Global Logistic Group therefore loads furniture and boxes together with other shipments upon request and only charges for the space your goods occupy in the steel container. The remaining cargo space is paid for by the other shipments.

This option is particularly suitable for returnees, seconded specialists, and retirees moving to South Africa who are dissolving their household here and starting furnished in Cape Town or around Johannesburg. What is taken along is what is difficult to replace locally: heirlooms, tools, specialist books, good kitchen appliances. Everything else yields more in sales than the freight costs for it.

What’s the catch? Shared cargo waits until the steel box is fully loaded and is only released at the destination once the entire container has been unloaded and sorted. If your move-in date is already set, it is better to plan your move to South Africa with your own container. Our page on overseas removals shows how such a sea shipment generally works.

Moving to South Africa Container: 20 feet, 40 feet or shared

Whether full-size containers are worthwhile for your move to South Africa or a shared space is sufficient depends solely on the volume. Before we calculate, we measure the rooms, convert to cubic meters, and deduct what you would sort out anyway. Only this figure makes two offers comparable; everything before that remains an estimate. The overview assigns the three sizes to typical household sizes:

Crop Fits Planning note
Shared Pitch Single household up to approx. 15 cbm Departure only when capacity is sufficient
20 feet Two-room apartment with furniture Loading at the doorstep, fixed departure
40 feet Family household with workshop and garden Highest freight rate, lowest price per cbm

The actual compromise is in the last column: the shared space saves money and requires adherence to deadlines, while your own container reverses this relationship. For a move to South Africa with children and a full household, the 40-foot option is therefore almost always more economical. We book both options through the same lines; our sea freight describes the processes behind them.

Volume, port selection, and customs determine your final price

Why do two quotes differ so much? Three factors explain almost every difference between two calculations for the same cut. You already know the volume after measurement. Which destination port makes sense for your move to South Africa depends on your future place of residence: Durban handles the majority of South Africa’s container traffic, Cape Town is closer to the Western Cape, and Gqeberha serves the Eastern Cape region. A wrongly chosen port will later cost you a long inland journey.

The third block is beyond our control. Terminal fees and import duties are set by South Africa in Rand, according to its own rates and the exchange rate on the day of arrival. These items are listed as a separate line in our offer. A flat rate at this point would only be a guess.

The packing date and departure rarely coincide. Your shipment bridges the waiting time in our warehouse in Geestland, directly on the A27 and just before the port of Bremerhaven. If a document is missing, this delays the move to South Africa without your household goods being left outdoors anywhere.

Correctly declaring household goods when moving to South Africa

The South African customs administration clearly distinguishes between personal belongings and commercial goods. What you used yourself before departure is considered household goods; an originally packaged device from an electronics store is not.

When moving to South Africa, this classification depends on actual money, as used household goods can remain duty-free under certain conditions. The local authority decides on the classification. We provide the basis for this: a packing list with individual values, clean export documents, and a bill of lading that exactly matches the list.

Once the inspection begins, moving to South Africa almost always revolves around two points. Your residence status must match the shipment, as the exemption is tied to immigration or permanent return. A move to South Africa, where the container arrives in the weeks around your own entry, generally proceeds much more smoothly through inspection, based on experience.

Vehicles are a special case. South Africa only allows used passenger cars under strict conditions and with official import permits. Therefore, those planning a move to South Africa usually sell their car in Germany. Electrical appliances, on the other hand, pose few problems: the grid supplies 230 V at 50 Hz, only the sockets differ. Our section on international removals shows how we generally handle overseas relations.

The limit of our service is at the quayside

Our responsibility for moving to South Africa ends when the container disembarks in Durban, Cape Town, or Gqeberha. This is stated in the offer before you book. From the quayside, a local clearing agent takes over: they register the shipment, accompany any inspection, and organize onward transport into the interior. For a destination in Gauteng, allow for a land distance of approximately 600 km from Durban, which is calculated separately.

Before the ship departs, all papers are complete. This includes a valued packing list, the export declaration, the bill of lading, and contact information for the agent at the port of arrival. Overseas transports have been part of our daily business since 2008, and the port of Bremerhaven is on our doorstep. Both together keep the number of queries small. We apply the same approach to other routes, for example, when moving to the USA.

We will calculate your move to South Africa as soon as we receive photos of the rooms, the pick-up address, and your desired month. Inquiries will go to Markus Freiknecht, not to a ticket system. He can be reached by phone and via WhatsApp.
