When is a car considered a classic car?

For the US import of a classic car, the following applies: If the vehicle has already been imported and registered in a country that is a member of the European Union, customs duties and 19 percent import VAT are waived. Registration then takes place uniformly via the registration office according to §21 StVZO. However, when purchasing from a private individual, it must be proven that unrestricted ownership exists and that you can dispose of it.
An already registered American vehicle can be imported at a reduced rate if it has been cleared through customs in transit. Shipping and temporary license plates are checked by the customs authorities. The official gazette is decisive for the registration documents and customs payment. If a vehicle has been imported into the EU, no VAT is due either, due to the free movement of goods in Europe.
